Decluttering- Your 5 Decisions
We know we have to do it. But trying to decide what to do with it all may be daunting.
Here are the 5 options you have:
Let’s take a closer look…
Trash. The obvious and the easiest. Anything broken, worn out, expired. This is where you start. Grab a trash bag and go room to room. Anything that is trash goes into the bag. When the bag is full, immediately take it out to the trash bin.
Recycle. Another easy one. If you recycle, anything you are discarding can be considered for recycling. Grab two trash bags instead of one. Label one trash and the other recycle then go through your home.
Keep. Yes or no are your options. Here are some questions to ask:
- Do you love it?
- Do you need it?
- Do you have space for it?
- Does it fit? Is it flattering? In good condition? Will you ever wear it again?
- Is it a duplicate/triplicate?
- Can it be easily replaced?
- Does it serve or fulfil a purpose in your life right now?
Sell. Consider whether an item can be sold for cash. Facebook Marketplace is my go-to. Also consider Craigslist, Offer Up, Let Go, ebay, a consignment store.
Donate or Give Away. Sometimes the best thing to do is just donate it. It’s a win-win situation. You declutter, the recipient benefits from that. Donate your items to Habitat For Humanity/ReStore, Salvation Army, the local veteran’s association. or local donation center. For us, it’s KARM. Perhaps you have a specific object in mind for a specific person. That’s great BUT ensure that the person on the receiving end actually wants it. Do not guilt or shame someone into taking something you are getting rid of. Do not let your clutter become their clutter.
